I Love Farmers Markets

Farmers Market

The Daily Garriga classic!

Okay, the truth is I don’t often go to farmers markets. I don’t cook much these days since I am in a temporary nomad state. I do, however, love the idea of these markets. I imagine a time in the not too distant future when I will be cooking regularly. I can see myself hauling bags of fresh produce, fish, and grains into the kitchen and then planning delicious and nutritious meals for the rest of the week.

Here are my top five reasons why farmers’ markets can’t be topped:

1. Healthy Eating!
Shop at a farmer’s market and you can find food that not only tastes good, but is good for you. You won’t be playing Russian Roulette the way you do at the supermarket. A farmer’s market will be full of perfectly ripe produce, chock full of nutrients, as well as meat, poultry, fish, and dairy that comes from free range livestock. A farmer’s market is your best bet to avoid “Frankenfood.”

2. Selection!
A great farmer’s market will have nearly every food item you could possibly want. Need to get your groceries for the week? Hit your local farmer’s market instead of Whole Foods and you’ll find an even better selection.

3.Price!
If you’re looking for healthy food at an affordable price, you can’t do better than a farmer’s market. No overseas shipping or corporate markups here.

4. Support Local Farmers!
Yes, local farmers still exist. And they do a great job of delivering fresh, organic food to a farmer’s market near you. By channeling your food dollars to local family farms instead of giant factory farms, you are making a statement as to what kind of food you really want. The factory farms will only clean up their act when they are absolutely certain that we are not willing to pay for bad food from producers who do not respect people, animals, and the environment.

5. Have fun!
Shopping at farmers’ markets can be a great way to meet new people from different cultural backgrounds. Forget Facebook and Twitter. Want to find truly interesting people and engaging conversations? Spend a few hours at your local farmer’s market. Not only will you make new friends, but you’ll also discover new foods and new ways of cooking. A trip to the farmer’s market can be a great way to spend an afternoon with your family or a fun date with your significant other. Give it a shot!

So have I convinced you yet to visit your local farmer’s market? Okay, maybe you just aren’t interested in the hassle of a hard to reach location with limited hours. No problem. Now you can get fresh farmers’ market groceries delivered. Who wouldn’t want to come home to a box full of healthy, delicious, and locally produced food options?

If you’re still not convinced to give up the supermarket in favor of the farmer’s market, I’m not sure what else to tell you. Perhaps you should try watching the documentary “Food, Inc.” and see if you still feel the same way.
